Bit 1

The Location

Tin mining off the coast of Thailand has been very lucrative for many years. Not anymore. As the price of tin has dropped over the decades, so too has the profit margin of tin mining. Since the late 1990s, it practically costs more to dredge up tin from the sea floor than you can sell the stuff for.

This image was taken on a 50-year-old tin mining dredge off the coast of Thailand. It was something out of a Mad Max movie — eroded, rusted, dilapidated, and falling apart. In short, a perfect subject for the kinds of things I like to shoot!

The Subject

This is a close-up abstract image of one of the drill bits used to grind the sea floor and suck up the tin.
