Free Photoshop Actions
What's an Action?
Actions are incredibly useful things in Photoshop. If you're familiar with "macros", Actions are easy. If you're not...well, they're still easy!
Actions are a way of compressing a series of image manipulations you do in Photoshop into a keyboard shortcut. Say you have an image, then apply Hue/Saturation, Gaussian Blur, Levels, and Layer Mask work to it. You love the effect and want to duplicate it for other images.
Through the Actions Palette, you can name your action, assign a keyboard shortcut to it, then record all your manipulations. On the next image, all you have to do is press the keyboard shortcut, and badda bing — done.

PhotoEffects
Gavin Phillips's PhotoEffects is a great looking site and has a couple of free Actions for us. Thanks Gavin. Go to PhotoEffects, scroll down a bit, and click the free actions link for Mac or PC (they will automatically download).
The effect, above, is called "Softly" and one I really love. It's given the image very much of an antique feel.

Action Central
Action Central comes to us from avid photographer and Photoshop user Jim Lewis.
Jim has an extremely generous 150 Actions where you can view examples and download your free copy. The example, above, is called Aly's Color Action, authored by Alyson Camacho.
Jim's Quick Links page puts you one click away from downloading the actions automatically. Visit Jim's Action Central site for more than just Actions — there's a long list of free tutorials to be found there, too.
Addicted to Design
Addicted to Design has three Actions for free — a Lomo camera effect, Infrared effect (example above), and an action to turn your images into a Polaroid 600 Instant film look-alike.
On Addicted to Design's home page, you'll find 10 categories of Actions (Black&White Toning, Resizer, Velviator, and more) priced very reasonably. All together, they comprise over 100 Actions.
Adobe
The Adobe site lists over 5,000 actions — most of them free. Click the "Photoshop" link in the "Exchanges by Product" menu in the middle of the page. Then select "Actions" in the "Filter by Category" menu near the top. Finally, click the "Filter" button to get what you want.
By following the above steps, you can select any of 14 different categories including scripts, tutorials, plugins, brushes, gradients, custom shapes, on and on.
Action FX
Action FX has an excellent selection of Actions for text (along with 2 pencil sketch Actions). The site is brought to us by Al Ward and thanks to you, Al, for making all of this freely available.

Try out the bx228 Fractal Brushes by Admir Veljovich. This is a great set of Photoshop fractal brushes, 36 in all, that are very elegant and subtle — great for creating complex abstracts.

Seishido
Visit Seishido for an excellent selection of free brushes. When you get to the page, under "exclusive", on the left, click "freeware" to get to the free stuff. You might want to check out the commercial stuff, too! It's not expensive and very good. There are over 100 styles of brushes available for free download.
500ml.org
There are some very beautiful brushes here and it's well worth a visit. Get on the the home page of 500ml.org and click the "Free PS7 brushes and stock photos" link on the left. Then click "Enter". On the next page, click "The brushes" at the top. Now click "agree" to the reasonable terms of use, and you have over 4 dozen brush sets to choose from.

Obsidian Dawn
Obsidian Dawn is a great site to go to — not only for all the brushes that are available, but for their other offerings. The tutorials page explains details about creating brushes, installing them, creating pattern brushes, using brush techniques, and a lot more.
Deviant Art
JavierZhX has a page at DeviantArt which features his extensive list of free Photoshop brushes. There are over two dozen abstract brushes, including a master set, as well as grunge brushes, vector brushes, fractal, and natural brushes. The variety is truly excellent.
Free Fonts

Astigmatic One Eye
Astigmatic One Eye: These free fonts are brought to you by Astigmatic One Eye Typographic Institute. On the top menu bar, click "freeware" to get fonts for both Mac and PC. They also have many fonts for sale. Being a fan of old style fonts, I liked their typewriter collection. If you buy one set, you're a member for life.
Blue Vinyl Fonts
Blue Vinyl Fonts: From the menu on the left, click "freeware fonts" to get the free fonts. When you enter to page, click on the "see more" icon to get examples of bold, italic, etc. From there, you can click for a Mac, a PC, or Opentype Postscript.
Chank
Chank Fonts: Click the "free fonts" button at the top right — fonts for Mac and PC. Their collection dates back to 1999 so it's quite extensive — give them a try.
DaFont
DaFont: This is an excellent source for free fonts. There are nine categories of fonts: Fancy, Foreign look, Techno, Bitmap, Gothic, Basic, Script, Dingbats, and Holiday.
All the fonts are available in either PC or Mac OS X format so go have a look and start beefing up your catalog of fonts.
Font Diner
Font Diner: Font Diner has a very nice selection of retro fonts. Click "free silverware" to get the free stuff, then simply click the "PC" or "Mac" button to get what you want.
High Fonts
HighFonts: On the top left of their page, click "free fonts". The navigation panel on the right of the free fonts page has links to dozens of other sites with free stuff, so don't miss that. All the fonts on this site are for a PC. If you're on a Mac, you can also use these but you'll have to download the font converter first (there is a link for that on the site).
Misprinted Type
Misprinted Type: This site has loads of fonts, both free and commercial. It also happens to be a great looking site — refreshingly different and creative in design. There are all sorts of interesting clickable spots to find and discover. The fonts available for download are for both Mac and PC.
Simply the Best
SimplyTheBest: This site has a very large number of fonts available. They're a mix of free and commercial, PC and Mac.
Urban Fonts
UrbanFonts: Great deal of fonts here for Macs and PCs — both commercial and free. They even have a forum where you can ask and learn about all things font.
